Sarasota, Florida’s fly fishing club the Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers (MCFF) is hosting the second annual ‘Tie for Pie in July’. This huge fly tying event is spearheaded by Jay Tinsky & Brian Boehm of the MCFF. The event features some of the area’s best and most notable fly tyers. Last year was the event’s first year and it was, by all accounts, a resounding success. Huge numbers of guests poured through the doors of the Sarasota Garden Club to stuff their faces with free pizza and witness a room full of great fly tyers sharing tips and showing everyone how to tie their favorite flies. This year’s event is on July 25th, 7:00 PM at the Sarasota Garden Club. Additional event details can be found in the flyer at the bottom of this post.
This year’s lineup is as follows:
Joe Mahler of Fort Myers, Florida tied his famous ‘Straw Boss’ fly last year. He is acknowledged as a premiere fly tyer and casting instructor. The club is beyond excited to have him back and eager to see what he ties this year.
Captain Rick Grassett of Sarasota, Florida is the standard for full-time fishing guides in the area. He has a number of patterns sold by the Orvis company. We’ll see which of those patterns he is tying this year.
Zachary Griffith of Duppy Flyco. is back. Last year he shared a bonefish fly pattern with guests. This year he returns, bringing his detail-oriented skills and style to the event. Welcome back Zach.
Captain Codty Pierce of BackCountry Adventures comes highly recommended. He’s a guide in SW Florida who specializes in sight fishing. He will fit right in with his skills on the vise.
Jim Cannon, the former owner of the Blue Quill Angler fly shop in Evergreen, Colorado is the final tyer. He has an extensive background in tying things both small and large. His skills and experience are a welcome addition to the event.
