Fishing in Sarasota, Florida this December has been good. We have been experiencing regular cold fronts and that is making finding fish much easier. Whether we’re having strong north winds, strong winds from the south or a calm sunny day, fishing has been consistent.
With water temperatures dropping, snook have been less active in the morning. They’ve been stationary deep under docks or the bottoms of canals. On a few mornings, they’ve been very shallow, warming themselves in the waters first hit by the sun. They can also be found near creek mouths or in creeks at first light. Fishing dock lights at night after a warm up has produced some excellent action on the fly rod. Small glass minnow patterns and shrimp imitations are working well. We’re using patterns from size 2 down to size 6.
Redfish have been active around mullet schools. We’re finding a wide range of sizes with redfish. Smaller reds have been pretty easy to come by. The larger fish we are finding on flats where mullet are working very hard and where multiple schools of mullet are present. Seeing herons and egrets that are actively feeding has been a good sign that larger reds are around as well. 3″ DOA CAL series shad tails in the ‘New Penny’ color has been the best color for finding reds. Aqua Dream spoons have produced the largest fish. The best flies have been shrimp imitations and clousers.
Spotted Seatrout action has been best when drifting and fishing the deep grass flats. Larger trout can be found in fairly shallow water near potholes, sand, and even mud. These fish will spook easy, so making longer casts and stealthy approaches are key. Wading is probably the best option for sneaking up on these fish right now. The ‘Electric Chicken’ color by DOA has worked well on the deeper grass. For fly fishing, clousers in white, chartreuse, or pink on intermediate or sink tip lines will be your best bet.
